Why the edges get blurrier the stronger the magnifier is

Anyone using a magnifying lamp with a high diopter rating knows the effect: in the centre everything is razor sharp, towards the edge it becomes softer, sometimes with a faint colour fringe. That is not a defect in your lamp – it is physics. And because the question comes up regularly, here is an honest explanation.

The cause: chromatic aberration

White light consists of many colours, and a lens refracts each colour to a minimally different degree. In the centre of the lens that goes unnoticed. Towards the edge, where light is deflected more strongly, the colours diverge measurably – the image loses sharpness and picks up a fine coloured fringe.

Two factors amplify the effect:

  • A higher diopter rating – stronger refraction, stronger colour separation
  • A larger lens diameter – the edge zone lies further from the optical axis

Both together – a large lens and high magnification – is the most difficult combination.

Why there is no simple solution

We did not merely look this up, we had it investigated: an optics specialist was commissioned to develop better lenses for us, and in parallel we held talks with two leading lens manufacturers in Asia. After months the result was clear: at the lens sizes a magnifying lamp requires, the problem cannot be solved with a single-piece lens.

There is a known solution – the bifocal lens, made of two cemented lenses with different refractive properties that compensate for each other. But it only works at small diameters, the kind familiar from hand magnifiers and watchmaker's loupes. Scaled up to magnifying-lamp format, such a lens becomes too heavy and too expensive.

Anyone promising you a large, highly magnifying glass lens that is sharp to the edge is promising something that does not exist in that form.

What to make of it in practice

Choose the weakest lens that is sufficient for your work

A 3-diopter lens delivers a largely undistorted image across the whole area and leaves plenty of room to work. Only when the detail really is too small does the stronger lens pay off – and by then you are working in the centre of the lens anyway.

Use the centre

Move the workpiece into the middle zone of the lens instead of working at the rim. That sounds banal, but it feels like doubling the image quality.

Light beats magnification

A large part of what feels "too small" is in truth "too dark". More and more even light often achieves more than a stronger lens – and it costs you no sharpness.
