Why our magnifying lamps run on extra-low voltage
Put an older magnifying lamp next to a current one and you notice a difference: the cable used to run straight into the lamp, today there is a power supply in between. That is not a cost-saving measure but a deliberate safety decision – and the real reason behind the generation names MKII and MKIII.
The problem with mains-powered work lamps
A magnifying lamp is constantly being moved: pulled closer, swung aside, repositioned. The connecting cable goes through every one of those movements. On a device running directly on 230 volts mains voltage, that is a risk: under heavy mechanical stress the mains cable can be damaged – up to the point where live conductors are exposed.
That is not a theoretical scenario but the normal case for a device that is moved a hundred times a day.
Our conclusion: the move to external power supplies
We have progressively converted the power supply of all our magnifying lamps to GS-certified external power supplies. As a result, only harmless extra-low voltage now reaches the lamp itself – 20 or 24 volts, depending on the series.
Three advantages follow from that:
- Personal injury is ruled out. There is no longer any mains voltage on the moving cable.
- Markedly reduced interference emission. Relevant wherever sensitive electronics work nearby – inspection stations, laboratories, electronics workshops.
- The power supply can be replaced. If it fails, the whole lamp does not have to be sent in.
What MKII and MKIII mean

The designation "MK" simply stands for a revised version. The step from MKII to MKIII is the most significant one, though: it concerns safety.
