Two shapes, two ways of working
Magnifying lamps come with round and with oval lenses. The choice is rarely deliberate — most people simply take what the desired model offers. Yet the shape changes how the lamp feels more noticeably than one dioptre step does.

What distinguishes the round lens
Optically the round shape is the obvious one: a lens refracts light rotationally symmetrically about its axis, so the image behaves the same in every direction. Sharpness decreases evenly from centre to edge — you quickly learn where the good area ends.
The second advantage is area. A round lens of 152 mm diameter offers noticeably more usable area than an oval one with a 110 mm short axis. Anyone working across a surface — lengths of fabric, circuit boards, whole book pages — benefits immediately.
What the oval shape is for
An oval is not a compromise made to save money but an adaptation to the direction of work. Most fine tasks run across the width, not the height: a line of text, a row of solder joints, a lash line, the edge of a nail.
At 110 × 150 mm you get more field of view across the width than with a round 127 mm lens, and slightly less in height. For anything that follows a line, that is the better distribution — you have to reposition the lamp less often.
There is also a practical point that is rarely mentioned: the flatter build leaves more room between lens and workpiece. Anyone working with both hands under the lens finds that more comfortable.
The decision aid
Without claiming to be absolute — both shapes work for almost everything:
- Round, large (152 or 177 mm) – when you want to survey an area: visual inspection, modelling, reading whole pages, working on large pieces.
- Round, 127 mm – the all-rounder. Suits practically every task and is the most widespread size, so the choice of lamps and replacement lenses is correspondingly large.
- Oval – when your work follows a line: lashes, nail work, rows of solder joints, lines of text, seams.
What the shape does not influence
So that no false expectations arise:
- The magnification. It depends solely on the dioptre figure, not on the shape. An oval 5-dioptre lens magnifies exactly as strongly as a round one.
- The working distance. That too follows the dioptre figure — around 20 cm at 3 dioptres, around 9 cm at 8.
- Edge sharpness in principle. That the edges soften is due to the physics of refraction and affects both shapes. With the oval it simply shows up sooner along the short axis, because the edge is closer.
Changing is not possible
A common misconception: the lens shape cannot be converted. Mount and adjusting ring are part of the series — an 861X takes only an oval replacement lens, an 851X only a round one of 152 mm. Replacement lenses exist for all series, but always only in their own shape and size.
