Reflections on the lens — what is normal and what helps

A glass lens reflects. Always a little. That is physics and not a product fault – but it is not something that should be glossed over either. Here is where the reflections come from, when they get in the way and what can be done about them.

Where the reflection comes from

At every interface between air and glass, a small part of the light is reflected instead of transmitted. A magnifying lamp has two such surfaces – the top and the bottom of the lens. What you see as a reflection is usually your own surroundings: a window, a ceiling light, light-coloured clothing.

To be honest: our lenses are not anti-reflective coated. That applies to almost all magnifying lamps on the market – coated lenses are the exception at this size, because the coating is elaborate and delicate on large glass surfaces.

What really helps in practice

Avoid having the light source behind you

The most common cause of disturbing reflections is a window or a ceiling light behind you. Turning the workstation slightly often achieves more than any technical measure.

Change the angle of tilt

Even a few degrees of tilt move the reflection out of your field of view. That is exactly what the articulated arm is for.

Darken the surroundings, brighten the working area

When the lamp itself is the brightest light source in the room, external reflections largely disappear.

A dark working surface

A matt, dark surface reflects less back into the lens than a white desktop.

If you film or photograph

For video and photo recordings through the lens, the main problem is not the reflection but the individual LEDs appearing as points of light. When it is no longer a question of handling

If the reflection cannot be brought under control even after rearranging the workstation, or if you see a haze instead of a clear reflection, do get in touch. A milky haze tends to indicate a film on the lens – and that can usually be removed easily.
